The History of Polly Pocket

In 1983, Chris Wiggs, a designer for Bluebird Toys, came up with the concept for Polly Pocket after seeing his daughter play with a dollhouse. It was named after her daughter, Polly.

The original Polly Pocket doll was a 3-inch figure with a magnet on her back that allowed her to be attached to a metal playset. The first Polly Pocket playsets were launched in 1989 and were an instant hit.

The Rise to Popularity

In 1998, Mattel purchased Bluebird Toys and the Polly Pocket brand. Mattel relaunched Polly Pocket in 1999 with a new line of dolls and playsets.

The new Polly Pocket dolls were significantly larger than the original Bluebird dolls, but they still retained the magnetic feature.

The Polly Pocket line continued to grow in popularity, and in 1998, Mattel acquired Bluebird Toys. The Polly Pocket line has continued to be produced by Mattel, and it remains popular with young girls all over the world.

The Fall From Popularity

The toy’s popularity began to decline in the mid-1990s due to competition from other dolls such as Barbie and Bratz. In 1998, Bluebird Toys was bought by Mattel, and the Polly Pocket toy line was discontinued in 2002.

In 2003, Mattel released a line of Polly Pocket dolls with “magnetic clothing” that would stick to the doll’s body. This line was short-lived, and in 2004 Mattel discontinued the Polly Pocket line altogether.

The Return of Polly Pocket

The Polly Pocket brand experienced a resurgence in popularity in 2018, thanks in part to a new line of dolls released by Mattel. The new dolls are more detailed and lifelike than the original Polly Pockets, and they come with a variety of accessories and playsets.
