The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the statutory body responsible for the development and maintenance of standards, specifications and technical documents for goods and services, as well as for independent testing.
The BIS is under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. The BIS has been given responsibility for the development of technical standards, specifications and quality control systems for goods imported into India from countries other than India.
