Approximately 280 million people are said to suffer from depression. However, nearly everyone will likely experience a period of depression at some point in their lives.

It can be hard to get ourselves out of that low feeling and remember how to be happy during these periods. Sometimes we just need a reminder of the habits that help bring a smile to our faces.

This is why we’ve put together this list of 6 ways to practice happiness.

1. Journaling

It can be as simple as writing down a few thoughts daily or as elaborate as a bullet journal. Even if you’re not comfortable having a traditional journal, you could write it down and throw it away.

Writing out your thoughts and feelings can be highly therapeutic and helps us remember how to be happy in life. Keeping a journal can be a way of planning things out or tracking your mood and habits. It can also be a great place to record what you’re grateful for.

2. Gratitude

Practicing gratitude can work wonders for turning your attitude around and reminding you what all you have to be thankful for.

If you keep a journal, you can dedicate a page to writing down a few things you are grateful for each day. After a while, you’ll have a page you can go back to “count your blessings,” so to speak.

3. Meditation

While this can sound intimidating, all you have to do is breathe. An easy way to start is to sit in a quiet, comfortable area and take deep breaths. If you have negative thoughts, try counting to three while breathing in and out.

4. Sleep

Sleeping helps us feel refreshed and rejuvenated, improves our brain function, and leaves us feeling overall happier about our lives. It also helps us heal when we are sick are injured.

5. Unplugging

Undoubtedly, we are living in the technological renaissance, which has allowed us to have substantial innovations in many different fields. However, this isn’t always what’s best for us.

Since everyone has a smartphone, we can almost instantly access breaking news. Unfortunately, some of the most-shared information isn’t exactly positive. Unplugging and taking a break from technology can give us a moment’s reprieve and help us be a bit happier.

6. How to Be Happy by Learning Something New

Learning something new can spark happiness as well. If you find yourself coming up short on learning new things, why not take a happiness course?

You may be surprised to find that you have learned something new and learned how to be happy with yourself.
